My Annual PSA: Labor Laws Apply to Non-Union and Union Companies Equally

My Annual PSA for All Employers

Section 7 of the NLRA protects employees’ rights to engage in concerted activities for collective bargaining or for other mutual aid or protection—and these protections apply even in non-union workplaces.

Examples of protected concerted activity include:
* Discussing wages or working conditions (including online),
* Distributing workplace-related materials,
* Refusing unsafe work as a group,
* Reporting workplace problems to government agencies,
* Speaking to the media about labor issues,
* Joining together to raise concerns directly with the employer.

Importantly, Section 7 protection is not limited to union matters. Employees do not need to reference unions or traditional “working conditions” for their actions to be protected, as long as they are acting together to address workplace-related concerns.
